Ahh, poetry, the economic use of words that have meaning and rhythm. I have always enjoyed writing poems as well as sharing my interest in poetry with kids. I’ve had the pleasure of exploring this genre with fourth graders at Willagillespie school, and I’d like to share some of their hard work. Feel free to comment, encourage and support these young writers.
First, I’d like to offer one of mine that I shared with the students as we created together. This poem was inspired by a recent trip on an airplane.
Perfume
Silently, it sneaks
into my nose,
hides there
then tiptoes
down to my mouth,
where it ties my tongue tightly
and robs my breath.
Poem
Hard, hard to think
Sometimes comes in your mind,
Sometimes doesn’t
Sometimes challeging, but fun
Dark
Dark, blinds you with it.
Dark, swallows you.
When you face the sun you beat your shadow in a race, face away and he beats you.
Dark, it follows you everywhere.
Green is supreme
it’s the color of my team
my grandma makes a mean whipped cream
my mom loves to clean
jelly beans are keen
I love good hygiene
I want to ride in a submarine
I love black limousines
my favorite number is 15
I want to be a queen
my favorite colors are green and aquamarine
and now it’s the end of this scene.
Christmas
by Andy Rodriguez
Comes once a year,
getting a Christmas tree
and decorating it
with small objects.
Giving presents and
sharing joy with
friends and family.
Celebrating Jesus’
birthday
Great job, Andy!
Flappy
Talking Lego mailbox

Loves to be a star
and loves to pretend that he is a dragon
and loves ferris wheels
Eats hotdogs
Eats cinnamon rolls
Tacos is his favorite food
Flappy
Christmas a time to be jolly never jerky. From the presents under the tree,
to the delicious fruitcake. Santa is up in the air bringing cheer with rudolf the
reindeer. Naughty will pay a price, but that will never mean are you nice.
Kylie
by:Carsyn Oxenreider
Nice, sweet, and loving
Fierce like a bear
Strong like a lion
Fast as a cheetah
She is playful and helpful
Like ME
Bigfoot
I am a Bigfoot
Fast and sneaky
Never seen, but always peaky
I break branches day and night
I make paths with my eerie might,
Always lurking,
But never am I smirking
I hide in caves,
And jump like a blaze.
Horses
The heart and soul of me.
A beautiful wild animal with sparkling tail and
mane almost as if it were a piece of sun.
A strong creature that lives free and full of spirit.
A truly amazing animal.
Rosy the cat
The purr master
Who warms me up on frigid nights,
Like the fuzziest vests in the world,
The endless blood marks in my arm,
But heals like a silver bullet,
Her lonliness when she jumps on the roof,
Is sad since she is alone,
seven years of happiness
two years alone
JR.
Filling his hamster cheeks with sunflower seeds
’til they drop to his shoulders.
Digging his sharp nails in my skin
’til it tickles me so much I can’t stand up.
Scaring my three cats in his white ball,
while he’s rolling around the floor.
Stinking up my whole room
when I hold him.
JR. is the funniest hamster ever!
Snakes
They come in a package
with a constrict
and a bite
sitting on rocks in the bloody hot
desert
the heat is their existence
sneaking like a burglar
into their prey’s territory
scaring off adventurous children,
and they just showed their face
The snake
There was a snake,
And he liked salmon cakes.
Today he had a twitch
That made him feel like a witch.
Then he shook it off and had some fish cakes.
Storm
The storm’s starting.
Houses are floating.
Animals are swinging their arms.
Peoples are flying.
Storm’s gone.
Everything’s gone.
Snow
Wet drops of what I don’t know
that’s when you discover snow
come with me and you will see
how magical snow can be
just like frozen rain
coming down untamed
Math
by Kenneth Mitchell
Numbers scattered on the page,
racking my brain, to find out the conundrums.
Endless head aches,
while my fingers turn numb from being pushed against the pencil.
Laboring harder and harder,
struggling to finish before I pass out.
Colors
Brighter than the sun
Blacker than the howling night sky
Shining with its sparkling tint
Feels different with every shade you see
Awsome Ashia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
People by Devyn Dixon. People, so very different yet so similar. We all are so unique yet we all need water. How could we survive without one another?
Kenneth do you ever think to yourself how much you love math. You love math so much, and you know about it so much it just makes your poem better.
Great job, Kenneth! Thanks for helping others share their thoughts.
